They did this even when they could produce patterns that were similar to native speakers. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their choices to learner-internal factors like their personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life experiences. They also referred external factors, like relational advantages. They outlined, for instance how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform better in terms of the cultural and linguistic norms at their university.

The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures and penalties they could face in the event that their local social norms were violated.
